Acting classes. Maybe you’ve been told that you need to take them, before you can even hope to set foot on a stage.
Or perhaps you’ve been taking acting classes and workshops for a while now. You’re working really hard and doing everything right, in the hope of being in a show. You’re very serious and totally committed. Is it working? If not, why not take a break from classes and try something different?
If performing is what you love, you should just do it.
I cast kids who’ve been professionally coached, kids who’ve been to many classes and workshops, and kids who haven’t. I’ve found that many of the most exciting, truthful and moving performances come from kids who have had little or no professional training. It’s because these kids are naturally open, enthusiastic, passionate and eager to learn. They are a joy to work with. They take everything in, and put everything they have into the work. These kids are often the most charismatic and believable young actors — they are the ones you can’t take your eyes off of.
So, if you’ve been taking classes and workshops, but haven’t spent a lot of time on stage, I encourage you to take a break from all of that.
Whether you’ve taken classes or not, come do a show with us. You’ll work hard, you’ll learn a lot, you’ll make friends and have a lot of fun, too. And when its over, you’ll have an off-Broadway credit for your resume.
